Deselecting layers in layer panel

Description

I recently posted this question on gis.stackexchange ([[http://gis.stackexchange.com/q/210116/73835]]) to find out if it's possible to completely deselect layers in the layer panel so that new layers don't get added to groups. The current answer that works appears to be right-clicking in the layers panel, but I find the context menu that opens almost as irritating as having to keep rearranging my layers each time a new one is added.

Would it be possible to have the ability of clicking the white space of the layers panel to completely deselect items, or have an option button to determine if layers are added to groups or top the top of the layers panel.
